You take the time to write a really good blog-post.

You’ve done all the work and then you hit publish, only to hear…

Crickets.

It sucks. It plain sucks.

Most people think that Blog Commenting is dead.

But I’m here to tell you, that it’s not.

It took me a lot of time + 1 failed blog (that I’ve shut down in 2017) to learn how to write good posts in order to actually get people to comment on my posts.

My blog is fairly new and I currently have 15 posts on my blog at the moment. But 3 of them have over 50 comments and 1 of them is going to touch 100.

Eeeeeeek.

Now, here’s the painful truth.

Not every single post you write will bring in dozens of comments unless you:

  • Are an already established blogger. (or)
  • Have over  50K pageviews a month.

When you’re just starting out, it can be hard to get blog comments because you’ve been blogging for a very short time, i.e. no one knows about you yet.

Until you build authority in your niche and post consistently for a year or so, these are the tips you can use (which have worked rather well for me) to gain you a whole lot of blog comments.

Now, if you don’t have a blog yet and are looking to get started, I have a really detailed step-by-step guide on how you can set up your blog and start monetizing it right here.

Mind you, a lot of these require some work from your end. So, let’s get started.

This post includes affiliate links, meaning at no extra cost to you, I might make a small commission if you decide to buy something and this money will be used to feed my poor lil’ dogs. They are perennially hungry, my little ones.

Making Your Website more Comment-Friendly

1. Use an efficient Commenting System.

You can use a system like Disqus, but a lot of people have problems signing in and some of them aren’t comfortable with people accessing their profiles.

I’ve also had issues commenting via my phone on Blogs that use Disqus.

Hence in my opinion, it’s good to stick to WordPress Comments.

But this is totally your call.

You should use a comment system that you are actually comfortable using.

2. Ditch Captcha for the love of God and everything that’s good in this world.

In the time I’ve spent clicking on 3 squares that show me street signs, I could take my dogs out for a walk or write a novel.

You’re going to be driving people far away using that cursed Captcha.

Instead of Captcha to avoid spammers, install Akismet. It is a really good plugin that filters spam comments and trackbacks.

And it’s one of those 1 minute installation things that will save you years-of-hassle monitoring comments.

3. Install the Simple Comment Notification Plugin.

This is a nice, little plugin that notifies the person (who’s commented) via email that you’ve replied to their comment.

And this encourages further comments from the same person.

Writing Comment-Worthy Blog Posts

4. Write posts that work as comment magnets.

Before I write a post, I do some research. I look up related topics on Pinterest and Google and see if it is something that gets people talking.

Do your research in advance before you write a blog post. Create a blog content plan.

Trust me, it’s not going to work out that well.

These are 3 type of posts that do surprisingly well when it comes to comments. They are:

  1. List based posts.
  2. Controversial/Emotional Posts.
  3. Tutorial Posts.

My favorite types of posts are the list based posts because (let’s face it), they’re mighty fun to write.

*twists her pigtail and giggles*

You can read my step-by-step guide to write a viral post here.

Make sure to include tons of pictures/screenshots and lots of points if you’re doing list based posts. They’ve very catchy.

This list-based post fetched me nearly over 50 comments!

And my second favorite is Tutorials. This is a tutorial I did on how to gain 100K followers on Instagram.

These are tips I as an artist used to grow my following to 100K+ in just a few months. I'm sharing all of them in this very post - it includes how to build a stellar Instagram Profile and posting consistently in a theme. Read the Ultimate Guide on gaining 100K followers on Instagram as an artist.

It’s a good 5000+ word article, that took me 2 weeks to write.

I’m not friggin’ kidding you.

I’ve garnered 49 comments for this post alone so far.

Crazy huh?

Moreover, this post you are currently reading is over 3000 words.

When I wrote this post, I didn’t hold anything back. I gave away all my secrets. But it was worth it. Because people loved it. And they began to trust me.

I receive comments like this:

I wrote this post only a month ago and it now displays as the 3rd search in Google because it’s super detailed and has tips that are not mentioned anywhere else!

*wipes a tear away*

And this probably why, this post received so many comments.

Which brings me to my next point…

5. Post valuable blog content.

Imagine you are looking for a solution on the internet. You need some advice, or a recipe.

Fast.

You write your question in Google or maybe Pinterest. And you click on a title that guarantees you results.

But instead of a meaty solution, all you get are couple of unrelated phrases that leaves you with even more questions.

Will you leave a comment on that post?

People don't have patience to share your posts manually. Include social media share buttons in your posts to make sharing more easier!

In fact, you’ll be clicking everywhere desperately in order to leave that website so you never have to look back again.

Don’t be that website.

Each blog post you write must have a motive. It should answer a question that’s burning in your readers’ minds.

Be thorough.

Be systematic.

Have a process for writing your Blog Posts. Take your time, evaluate your goals and come up with a definitive Blog Content Plan.

Write from your heart.

So, don’t just write filler posts to fluff up your Blog. That won’t do any good to anyone. It may bring you some immediate traffic, but people will fly away just as quickly.

This is something I’m going to be harping on for as long as I can – write good, solid content.

*waves long, crooked finger*

Writing long and useful blog content consistently will help build your credibility as an author. And this will help gain you those blog comments you’re yearning to see.

6. Write a powerful and sticky headline.

Did you know that 8 out of 10 people will read your headline but only 2 people will actually click through to read your Blog Post?

Yeah, that statistic is pretty disheartening.

This may not seem like much but your headline could be the difference between a successful and a flop post.

Let me explain.

Initially, with my old blog; I never really understood why my posts got close to zero comments. However, I never deleted those posts when I shut down my blog. Because I knew something was wrong, not everything.

It was my headlines.

Well, they kinda sucked.

I recycled one of those posts into my current Blog and just tweaked the headline. And that same post which had close to 0 comments suddenly got over 25 comments.

I changed the headline “10 Things to do before becoming an Illustrator” into “10 Things I wish I knew before becoming an Illustrator”

I also added an illustration of a shocked woman under the title.

Bingo.

And it was pure gold, baby.

Are you an Illustrator ready to step out into the world? Then you must know these 10 things before becoming an Illustrator!

This may not seem like much, but the words strike a chord in anyone’s heart who wants to be an Illustrator. It strikes fear.

Moral of the story: Craft a headline that’s going to evoke an emotion from your audience. You want to drive them to feel something, so they click on your Blog Post!

Giving back the love

7. Build a routine of commenting on other people’s blogs.

Find at least 5 Blogs in your niche, that you love and adore. This may take a month or two, depending on how much you like to read. And next, leave thoughtful and appreciative comments.

Comment on Blogs that actually take the time to reply to comments. Note how conversations flow and see if you can add to the conversation.

You can either reply to someone else’s comment on another blog by adding a “I know! I had the exact problem and this is how I solved it…”

Or you can start a unique comment thread by directly writing to the author.

Now, I understand that this is a very time-consuming process, but trust me your efforts will not go in vain.

You are not only helping other Bloggers grow by shining more light to their posts, but you are also:

  • Building relationships with other bloggers. (which really helps you grow as a blogger)
  • Rising in the Blogging World by actually being seen by other Blogs. The more your name pops up in different places (in the same niche), the more curious other Bloggers will be and eventually, they’re going to click on your name to land on your website!

Therefore, spend some time each day or every alternate day to comment on a few blogs in your niche.

Possessing a good Commenting Etiquette

8. Leave meaningful comments.

Okay, now you know how important it is to comment on other blogs. But did you know that there is a right way?

Don’t just leave comments like “Great post. Check out my blog” or, “Wow, I should really try this.”

No. Never.

Ugh, that’s just spammy. And you’re not going to gain any brownie points for those.

Here are some tips for writing great blog comments.

  • Address the author of the blog post by name. Take the time to get to know the person who’s written that great blog post that’s actually helped solve your problem.
  • Compliment him/her and mention one 1 take away you’ve picked up from the blog post.
  • Add your own thoughts.
  • Finish by signing off with your name and if relevant you can add a link to your website at the bottom.

9. Use a nice Gravatar that defines YOU.

It’s weird when your name pops up next to an anonymous picture.

You’re not going to stand out.

And it’s difficult for people to put a name to a faceless picture.

So, before you start commenting on other people’s blogs and expect click-backs fix this.

Take the time to set up a Gravatar. Elna Cain explains why a Gravatar is important and how to set it up which you can read here.

Since I’m an Illustrator, I choose to go with my illustrated persona instead of my actual photo.

10. Reply to comments.

I cannot tell you how many blogs I’ve commented on, don’t reply to comments. I’m going to be fully honest here, it kinda blows.

Now, I totally understand that people are busy and don’t have time to monitor comments, but if they’ve approved the comment, there is a pretty good chance that they’ve read it… aaaaaaaand not replied.

It’s like sending a message to someone from your phone and the double tick shows, proving that they’ve read it but not replied.

Doesn’t it suck?

Doesn’t it make you wanna go and eat a tub of ice cream all by yourself?

No?

Just me?

Okay then, moving on…

So, when someone takes time out of their day, to read your blog post and leave you a little thank you note, take a little effort to reply with a thank you and a nice message.

Not only will you have brightened someone’s day but it also shows humility.

This encourages more people to comment because they know that if they comment on your post, you will write back to them.

Additionally, there are a lot of Big Bloggers that I respect from the bottom of my heart because they actually take time out of their day to respond to comments/tweets.

11. Ask a question that results in an actual discussion.

This is actually easier said than done. A lot of people will tell you that you have to ask a question at the end of the blog post to encourage further comments.

But let me go one step further and show you how it’s done.

Consider these two types of questions.

  1. Do you use a notebook? Let me know in the comments below!
  2. Okay, that was me. Now it’s your turn. What do you use your notebook for?

Okay, so between the two, which encourages you to write a comment?

Obviously the second one.

Because the first question results in a one word answer – Yes/No.

The second evokes a burning desire for the reader to write how he/she uses his/her notebook!

Therefore, always aim for a question that gets the reader to talk about themselves. That’s what we as people love doing, we love to talk about ourselves.

Be the friendly neighborhood Spiderman girl-next-door.

12. Implement Influencer Marketing

Probably one of the few times that I will be dropping such big words around here. But yes, I learnt this trick quite recently from a book called Content Inc.

I’ve never been more blown away reading a Business Book as much as this one. This book will teach you how to actually write content that people want to read. It emphasizes on the importance of building an audience before creating an product. And it’s packed with tips to gain a massive audience with your Blog!

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to create a successful Blog and market content like a pro. Joe Pulizzi doesn’t hold anything back. He shares everything he’s used to build his 6 Figure+ Business.

Fun Fact: I’ve used a lot of the tips from his book to become better at writing my blog posts.

Basically, the nicer you are to people in your community, the more likely they are to return the favor.

Wherever possible, try and link to other blogger’s articles within your posts. Don’t just link and leave it at that.

Write something nice.

Write about how that post helped you achieve what you wanted to and don’t forget to mention the author’s name. This shows that you care.

13. Harness the power of Facebook Groups.

When I was just starting out, I joined some Facebook Groups that were in my niche.

Every time, someone asked a question, I helped out with a long and detailed answer. If I could attach a relevant link, I would. But my first priority was to build trust and engage with people.

Once you’re seen as the friendly face who loves helping out, people will start spotting you out in the crowd.

I’d suggest joining groups that have around 5K-10K members.

The lesser, the better.

I feel a little lost in big groups because well… it’s big and it’s easy to get lost.

Other than commenting on other people’s posts, join Post Sharing Threads. Remember, don’t share your post and call it a day.

Write 1 line describing what your post is about and how it solves the problem. Then, leave the link. It’s easier for the eyes and you’re sure to get 2-3 comments with this method.

This is one of the best ways to market your Blog for free.

Don’t forget to give back the love and reply those comments.

14. Create your own Facebook Group

I’m part of 3-4 Facebook Groups that I actually love because it’s refreshing to spend one hour daily on them answering people’s questions. I also learn a lot from them and I’m able to keep up with current trends.

But here’s what I’ve noticed. The Facebook group admin will post one of her/his own posts every single day or once a week.

And it will be a super helpful post that he/she has just written.

Undoubtedly, this post will get loads of comments because the admin is allowed to share his/her posts at any time.

Now, mind you, having your own Facebook Group is a lot of work and requires a lot of time to maintain. But if building your own community is a dream that’s ben running in your mind for a long time, then this is definitely something you should add to your To-Do list.

Sharing is Caring + That’s how you get comments

15. Share on Social Media

Now, once you’re done publishing your Blog post, you’ll realize that your work is only half done.

Nobody is going to know that you’ve written a post unless you actually tell the world.

Pinterest is my number 1 Social Media because as you can tell, I’m sort of a visual person. I love drawing and all my blog post images are hand-drawn by Yours Truly.

I’d suggest rocking 1 Social Media than trying to rule them all.

After you’ve published your blog post, queue it in your Social Media with a magnetic sentence.

And then?

Do it again, but use a different line.

Not everyone is going to be waiting on Facebook for you to release that post. Some might miss it because they’re eating, sleeping or playing Candy Crush.

*guilty as charged*

That’s why you should share it again after 2 days. And again a week later. And again after two weeks.

The sharing cycle never ends, you see.

16. Send an email to your peeps.

I love writing a weekly email to my followers notifying them of new posts and sharing some tips to help them get their Blog/Online Business off the ground.

Not only do I get comments, but I also get valuable insights of what works and what doesn’t.

This helps me write better posts for them because I know what type of posts gain their favor. Furthermore, it also helps me understand what products I should create and market to them in the future.

And finally… one of my favorite methods,

17. Simply ask.

Knock and the door shall be opened.

Unless of course you’re a witch with a poisoned apple.

In which case, nobody is going to open the door for you.

Except Snow white.

All kidding aside, just ask for comments. Be honest with your readers and let them know that their comments are something you value and you’d love to hear what’s on their mind.

There ya go.

This is probably the most simple task we can do as bloggers but it’s a point that’s constantly overlooked maybe because it is so easy.

And that comes to an end of 17 killer ways to get blog comments.
